A Canandaigua commercialization center that is now part of the University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering is receiving $5 million from the state to expand the nanoelectronics industry into the Finger Lakes area.
The funding, which is being provided through the Empire State Development Corp., will go to what is known as the Smart System Technology and Commercialization Center. It was known as the Infotonics' Technology Center.
The funding is being provided through ESD's Upstate Regional Blueprint Fund.
ESD said the grant will help the center develop prototyping capabilities that could lead to more private investment and job creation in the area. The project is expected to be finished by July 2012. Included in the project area plans to retain 40 employees and create another 20 full-time.
