SUNY CNSE, Title Sponsors SEFCU and SUNY Name Capital Region Semifinal Round 'New York Business Plan Competition' Finalists
CNSE student team earns Capital Region semifinal round top honor; four CNSE teams selected to move to the final round after presentations showcased business plans leveraging the NanoCollege’s world-class resources
Albany, NY — As an embodiment of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s strategic vision creating unprecedented educational and entrepreneurial opportunities within New York State’s high-tech business ecosystem, finalists have been announced at the conclusion of the Capital Region’s semifinal round of the New York Business Plan Competition, with judges selecting Goodlight LLC, led by a team of students from CNSE, as the best team from the Capital Region semifinal competition for their semiconductor process technologies creating more efficient and reliable LEDs. The event was hosted by the SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE), along with title sponsors SEFCU and the State University of New York (SUNY).
The regional semifinal competition featured 30 student teams from six accredited New York colleges and universities who gathered to pitch their game-changing business proposals for a chance to reach the final round and win part of the more than $500,000 in total prizes. Each team selected by the panel of judges to advance to the finals received $500.
Goodlight LLC formed as a result of the SUNY Research Foundation’s Technology Accelerator Fund (TAF), which complements SUNY’s efforts to revitalize New York’s economy by providing funding for select technologies to accelerate their development and commercialization. Since its launch in 2011, the Technology Accelerator Fund has invested over $1 million to successfully advance the commercial readiness of a number of SUNY-developed innovations and has catalyzed the investment of an additional $1.2 million from external partners, including federal agencies, industry licensees, and investors. The team is advised by CNSE Associate Professor of Nanoengineering Dr. F. (Shadi) Shahedipour-Sandvik.
The fifth annual New York Business Plan Competition has continued to grow, drawing interest from hundreds of student-led startups who are pitching their ventures at colleges and universities in ten regional competitions throughout the month of April. Each team details their innovations in the areas that are driving 21st century progress. National venture capitalists, angel investors, investment bankers, and seasoned entrepreneurs serve as judges and provide the student teams with real-world feedback.
The final round will be held at CNSE’s Albany NanoTech Complex on April 25, when the top teams from each of the 10 regions will vie for the grand prize: $50,000 cash and over $50,000 in in-kind services.

The competition has grown to become the largest of its kind in New York State and one of the biggest in the nation and is presented by CNSE in partnership with the University at Albany School of Business and Syracuse University.
