START-UP NY Approval Empowers SUNY CNSE to Further Support the Governor's Blueprint for Innovation-Driven Economic Development While Providing Additional Unprecedented Opportunities for New York Students

ALBANY, NY - In continued support of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s strategic blueprint for innovation-driven economic development across New York, SUNY CNSE today announced approval of its START-UP NY plan.
Developed in consultation with the Regional Economic Development Councils, CNSE’s START-UP NY efforts will target specific sectors, including advanced manufacturing, medical research, clean energy, smart city, and information technology, based on the regional strengths and assets of CNSE’s various statewide locations.
The plan allows CNSE to continue to grow its university-industry partnerships, create jobs, and provide unique and world-class educational opportunities for students and faculty. CNSE’s existing public-private partnerships now exceed 300 companies that represent the most advanced global nanotechnology-driven industries. Nanotechnology growth in New York is projected to create and retain 20,000 jobs across the state by 2015.

CNSE's Start UP plan approval is both important and exciting as SUNY works to improve communities and break new ground in high tech research and development.”

CNSE leverages hundreds of industrial partnerships to develop custom-tailored curricula to serve both students and the business community. In this way, CNSE catalyzes the expansion of a nanotechnology-based ecosystem by supporting a robust research pipeline that includes innovation networks, nanoscale institutes, and education academics. CNSE students work side by side with industry leaders, preparing them for their future careers and producing the high-tech, highly trained workforce that attracts companies to New York and allows them to grow and flourish.
Targeting the accelerated expansion of established industry clusters, CNSE has designated the following locations for START-UP opportunities:
Albany Nanotech Complex
- CNSE’s Albany NanoTech Complex is a fully-integrated research, development, prototyping, and educational facility supporting education and commercialization programs targeting nanotechnology, clean energy, biomedical, IT, and Smart Cities, among others. It features industry compliant equipment (300mm and 450mm nanoelectronics fabrication tool sets, clean tech fabrication equipment such as those used for the development of photovoltaics and batteries, and biomedical processes) that provide strategic support through outreach, technology acceleration, business incubation, pilot prototyping, and test-based integration support for corporate partners.
Smart Cities Technology Innovation (SCiTI) Center (Kiernan Plaza)
- 82,090 SF of office and lab space
– The SCiTI Center is designed to serve as the city of Albany’s urban catalyst for business innovation, economic vitality and educational outreach while at the same time, it capitalizes on emerging smart device, data analytics, and design engineering technologies to establish an ecosystem around unique test-bed demonstration sites leading to wide-scale adoption of Smart City Technologies (SCT) solutions.

Smart System Technology & Commercialization Center (STC) – Located in Canandaigua, STC offers the largest array of world-class micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) -related solutions in the industry. At the core of STC’s technical capabilities is an infrastructure supporting MEMS design, fabrication, and packaging, all under one roof.
Land Available Albany Nanotech Complex – Zero Energy Nanotechnology (ZEN) Building Space
- The ZEN building will be a first-of-its-kind resource dedicated to enabling innovative research, development, and commercialization of green technologies, information technologies, and biomedical, among others. It is also the home of Tech Valley High School and the consolidated New York State Data Center. It will serve as an international showpiece and “living laboratory” for energy efficient and renewable energy technologies.

Additional future START-UP opportunities are expected at CNSE facilities in Buffalo, Syracuse, and Utica including the Buffalo Green Energy Innovation and Commercialization Hub, the Buffalo Medical Innovation and Commercialization Hub, the Buffalo Information Technology Hub, the Nano Utica Computer Chip Commercialization Center (Quad-C), and the Central New York Hub for Emerging Nano Industries in Onondaga County. START-UP opportunities at each of the CNSE hubs will be supported by a broad array of cross-regional partnerships aligned around state-of-the-art infrastructure, dynamic industry partnerships, and tailored educational programs to enable the growth of vibrant ecosystems in each of the targeted technology areas.
CNSE will continue to work with the Governor, the Regional Economic Development Councils, Empire State Development, and its partner companies to identify sites and maximize business eligibility for START-UP NY.
