Headquartered at SUNY Poly CNSE, the U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (PVMC) is a partnership between SEMATECH and SUNY Polytechnic Institute's Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (SUNY Poly CNSE), as well as with the University of Central Florida. Over 80 companies, universities, and high tech laboratories have committed to join the alliance that provides a major boost to the United States’ photovoltaic manufacturing industry. The consortium helps develop new photovoltaic manufacturing technologies, streamline their introduction into the global market, and help the United States gain a greater market share.
With the help of U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer, the PVMC secured a federal grant totaling $62.5 million; $57.5 million awarded to SUNY Poly CNSE and $5 million awarded to the University of Central Florida. With this federal
funding, the partnership can massively increase the United States’
share of the photovoltaic technology and products market, and
potentially create millions of jobs over the next decade. Before the announcement of the federal grant, the consortium had financial commitments
totaling $400 million from state and corporate entities. With the
additional $62.5 million from the Department of Energy the consortium hits the ground running with nearly half a billion dollars,
providing an immediate boost to this critical manufacturing sector.
