Description of Duties:
The research scientist duties will include, but will not be limited to: carrying out research activities related to a biomass-based water treatment project in Professor Cady’s group, guiding the training of junior members of the group and assisting with the technical direction of the project. Specifically, the position will focus on developing a biomass-based method for treatment of heavy metal contaminated wastewater. The research scientist’s duties will include executing independent research tasks, assisting/mentoring graduate and undergraduate students assigned to the project and producing relevant progress reports and scholarly publications. Individual tasks focus on developing methods for metal binding on biofilm-based water treatment media, general microbiological propagation/analysis, confocal microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and data analysis. The research scientist will be required to prepare project reports and presentation-based updates for the funding agency. Additionally, the research scientist must be willing and able to complete other duties in support of the project as reasonably assigned.
A doctorate in nanoscience/engineering (with biological sciences concentration), bioengineering, materials science or related field from a college or university accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization, and at least 1 year of post doctoral research experience. Candidates must have strong interpersonal and communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office suite; ability to work on multiple projects and manage time efficiently; ability to be assertive, exercise excellent judgment and decision making skills, and must be extremely organized and detail oriented; must have exceptional ability to communicate with scientists, students and other professionals. Candidates must address in their applications their abilities to work with culturally diverse populations. This position is contingent on the satisfactory completion of a background check; this position may require annual background checks.
